The six emcees of Athletic Mic League came together while still attending high school in Ann Arbor, MI. Known then as the Anonymous Clique: Buff, 14KT, Grand Champ, Texture, Tres Styles, and Vital joined forces with DJ Haircut and after two years of love and support from the local hip-hop community they made it official. Athletic Mic League was out to show the world what their brand of hip hop was all about.
hey capitalized on their growing notoriety by dropping their debut album Sweats and Kicks which received rave reviews from the streets and hip hop tastemakers alike. It also afforded them the opportunity of a lifetime. Their debut was heard by Yasser Khan, an upstart young manager out of Detroit’s Barak Records. He was enthralled by their sound, and immediately set out to find what he knew was a once-in-a-career group. He introduced them to Barak’s CEO, RJ Rice. Rice, a well-known record industry executive, recognized that AML had their finger on the pulse of what hip hop needed: an infusion of originality. Rice is the man behind seminal Detroit hip hop act Slum Village, and knew that if given the proper attention, AML had a chance to make history.
Athletic Mic League spent 2003 under the tutelage of RJ Rice, soaking up knowledge on what makes or breaks records in the ever-changing climate of the music business. The results are astonishing. In November of 2003, AML released their single "Feel It" to a thunderous reaction from the hip hop nation. Their new album Jungle Gym Jungle, is a highly anticipated watershed moment for both Detroit and for hip hop music.

Вполне ничего, по мне. Местами на J-Dilla даже похоже, хотелось бы, чтобы достойные наследники выросли)

Друзья, не поверите, но мне действительно очень понравилось. Местами наблюдается невероятный позитив, причем музыкальное сопровождение далеко не самое худшее. Спасибо «Zilden» за ссылку и «One2» за то, что убедил меня ознакомиться с этим EP. Надо будет уделить время альбому «Jungle Gym Jungle».

“Here it is… a project I unofficially had done since 2006. It started when James Yancey a.k.a. J Dilla passed that February. To cope with the death of my favorite producer, who I liked to call my unofficial “musical mentor,” I started making ‘donuts’ …uncontrollably. I never planned to release any of the material out of respect for Dilla & his craft. I’ve shared some of the music with others, in which they would repeatedly ask me to hear it, so I decided to put a little something together and make it official. JUST FOR YA’LL.
This is a collection of beats created about 3 years ago. Some ‘donuts’ style, some just around that era of 14KT beats. “Now & Laters” were always a favorite candy of mine. I used to go to Mindell’s Pharmacy in Ypsilanti back in the day and buy ALL of them. Sadly, I even stole change from my grandma’s (RIP) purse for them. They are addictive, yet fun to eat… something I found mutual when making music at the time. Ironically, I fell back in love with “Nowalataz” around this era (ask my homey Sarah “Merk Merk,” haha). Enjoy.“

It all started when I first got into the Red Bull Beat Battle in Detroit end of 08’. I was never known as a beat battle type producer and believe it or not, I actually don’t like battling with beats. However, that was my first time ever battling with beats. Knowing I was battling, I definitely found myself in a different frame of mind when I sat down to make joints in the lab. While in the lab, my motivation was making beats that I would have HATED if my opponent played them against me. I took a collection of beats where I had that mind state and mixed them with other beats I made during that time period. I’m setting this Killer Tape off with the first joint I ever made in a beat battle mind state and the rest is history. I got a new nickname under my belt now, 14KillaTape…haha” – 14KT
